Ledger Start – Getting Started with Ledger® Devices

Welcome to Ledger Start

Ledger Start is the official guide for new Ledger users who want to set up their hardware wallet, install Ledger Live, and begin managing their digital assets securely. This page provides a step-by-step overview of the process, ensuring that you understand every detail while protecting your funds from the very beginning.

Step 1: Unbox and Verify Your Ledger Device

When you receive your Ledger device, carefully unbox it and check that it is sealed and has not been tampered with. Ledger hardware wallets are shipped in tamper-evident packaging. If anything looks suspicious, contact Ledger Support immediately. Inside the box, you’ll find the device, a USB cable, a recovery sheet, and instructions. This is your foundation for a secure crypto journey.

Step 2: Power On and Initialize Your Device

Connect your Ledger Nano X or Nano S Plus to your computer or mobile device using the supplied cable. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your device. You will be prompted to create a PIN code. Choose a strong PIN that you can remember, as it protects access to your wallet in case your device is lost or stolen.

Step 3: Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

Your Ledger device will generate a unique 24-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the master key to your wallet and all your assets. Write it down carefully on the recovery sheet provided in the box. Never share it, never take a digital photo of it, and never store it online. Anyone with this phrase can access your funds. Store it in a safe and secure location.

Step 4: Install Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official companion app for your hardware wallet. Download it only from the official Ledger website. Once installed on your computer or mobile device, Ledger Live will allow you to manage your crypto accounts, track your portfolio, and perform transactions securely while your private keys remain offline.

Step 5: Add Accounts and Apps

Open Ledger Live and navigate to the Manager section. Here, you can install apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Solana. After installation, add accounts for each asset to Ledger Live. Your accounts will be displayed on the dashboard, where you can track balances and view transaction history.

Step 6: Send, Receive, and Secure Your Crypto

With Ledger Live set up, you can now send and receive crypto safely. Always verify transaction details on your Ledger device screen before approving them. The hardware wallet ensures that your private keys never leave the device, protecting you from malware and phishing attempts. This separation between your keys and your computer is the heart of Ledger’s security model.

Step 7: Advanced Features

Ledger Live offers more than basic account management. You can buy crypto through integrated partners, swap one cryptocurrency for another, or stake supported assets like ETH, DOT, and SOL to earn rewards. The app also supports NFTs, allowing you to securely view and send digital collectibles. All these features are designed to simplify your experience without sacrificing security.

Best Practices for Security

Ledger Start is not just about installing software—it’s about creating a secure foundation for your crypto journey. By following these steps, you ensure that your assets remain protected against theft and hacking attempts. With your Ledger device and Ledger Live, you are in full control of your keys and funds.
